The story
Christine Arron announced a new coaching arrangement with John Smith in Los Angeles on 11 December 2000. The French sprinter was the European 100-metre record holder with a time of 10.73 seconds.
How it unfolded
Arron had considered other American coaches before choosing Smith. His group included Ato Boldon and women’s world 200-metre champion Inger Miller, placing the move within an established international sprint training environment.
The wider picture
The announcement concerned preparation and coaching, rather than a change of national representation. A later federation report dated 16 January 2001 confirmed her arrival in Los Angeles and traced the decision to 11 December. The move and the arrival should therefore retain different dates.
