The result
Cara Black and Alexandra Fusai won the women’s doubles title at the 2000 ASB Bank Classic in Auckland, recovering from a set down to defeat Barbara Schwartz and Patricia Wartusch 3–6, 6–3, 6–4. The top-seeded Zimbabwean-French partnership completed its championship run during the tournament’s 3–8 January main-draw window.
The competition
Black and Fusai had reached the final without dropping a set. Their route included a 6–4, 6–4 quarter-final win over María Antonia Sánchez Lorenzo and Meghann Shaughnessy, followed by a 6–2, 7–6(4) victory over the seeded Slovenian pair Tina Križan and Katarina Srebotnik. The final required a different response after the Austrian combination took the opening set.
The wider context
Schwartz and Wartusch had beaten fourth seeds Virginia Ruano Pascual and Paola Suárez 6–3, 6–2 in the other semi-final. The resulting title match brought together pairs from opposite halves of the 16-team draw. Black and Fusai’s comeback decided the doubles championship on Auckland’s outdoor Rebound Ace courts, separately from the singles event.
