The story

Trine Hattestad threw 68.22 metres in Rome on 30 June 2000 to set a women’s javelin world record. The performance also delivered her first victory in that year’s Golden League series.

How it unfolded

Tatyana Shikolenko finished second with 63.83m and Osleidys Menéndez third with 63.23m. Those marks show the separation between Hattestad’s winning throw and the rest of the podium.

The wider picture

The record is a historical achievement, rather than the current world best. Hattestad improved it again in Oslo later in the season, so the Rome performance belongs to a sequence of changes in the event’s record progression.
