World ice hockey championship opens in St Petersburg

The 64th World Ice Hockey Championship opened in St Petersburg, Russia, on 29 April 2000. Vladimir Putin formally declared the tournament open at its opening ceremony.

The championship opens

The 64th World Ice Hockey Championship opened in St Petersburg, Russia, on 29 April 2000. Vladimir Putin formally declared the tournament open at its opening ceremony.

A Japanese guest at the ceremony

Japanese Prime Minister Yoshiro Mori attended the ceremony with Putin. Putin asked those present to welcome his Japanese guest.

Putin also sent greetings to the participating teams and guests in a separate message that day. The ceremony brought the visiting Japanese leader into the opening of the international sporting event.

The tournament calendar

The championship dates were 29 April to 14 May 2000, with St Petersburg as the host city. The opening ceremony took place on the first day of that tournament schedule.
