A 34–20 victory in Rome marked Italy’s first match in the expanded championship.

The story
Italy began their first Six Nations campaign by defeating Scotland 34–20 on 5 February 2000. The fixture was played at Stadio Flaminio in Rome, and the official championship archive preserves the score and date.
How it unfolded
The result mattered beyond one afternoon: Italy’s entry expanded the Five Nations to six national teams. Beating Scotland immediately gave the new participant a competitive milestone within the established European championship.
The wider picture
Giampiero De Carli scored Italy’s first try in the competition, a contribution recalled in the organiser’s account of his career. The debut victory should be distinguished from the final championship standings: winning this match did not mean Italy won the tournament.
