Kuerten survives Norman’s resistance
Gustavo Kuerten won his second Roland-Garros men’s singles title on 11 June 2000, overcoming Magnus Norman 6–2, 6–3, 2–6, 7–6. The Brazilian led by two sets, but Norman won the third and forced a fourth-set tie-break before the final was settled.
The route to the title
Norman’s resistance made the closing stages unusually difficult for Kuerten. The tournament’s account records eleven match points before he secured the championship. Winning the opening two sets had given Kuerten a strong position; converting that advantage into a victory required him to withstand Norman’s recovery.
Place in the season
Kuerten had first won the Paris title in 1997 as a comparatively unknown contender. By 2000 he entered the event among its favourites and justified that status on the outdoor clay courts. The final gave him a second major singles title in Paris and came in the same edition in which Mary Pierce won the women’s singles.
