The story
António Pinto won the twentieth London Marathon on 16 April 2000 in 2:06:36. The Portuguese runner improved both the course mark and the European best, while Kenya’s Tegla Loroupe took the women’s title.
How it unfolded
Pinto finished ahead of defending London champion Abdelkader El Mouaziz, who ran 2:07:33. Khalid Khannouchi, the holder of the world best, placed third in 2:08:36. That finishing order shows the strength of the field behind the winner rather than presenting his time in isolation.
The wider picture
The official World Athletics report identifies the edition, race date and performances. This was a road marathon result: Pinto’s European best should not be confused with a track record or with the separate world best held by Khannouchi.
