The story

Ian Thorpe swam 1:41.10 in the men’s 200m freestyle on 6 February 2000. World Aquatics lists the performance as a world record achieved in Germany during the 1999–2000 FINA Swimming World Cup.

How it unfolded

The result was recorded in a 25-metre pool. This is an essential distinction: short-course times involve more turns and are maintained separately from 50-metre, or long-course, records. The performance should not be described as an Olympic long-course record.

The wider picture

Thorpe’s 2000 season also included the Sydney Olympics later that year. The February swim belongs to the World Cup circuit, while his September Olympic relay result belongs to a different competition and pool length.
