Confirmed development

The Eastern Conference defeated the Western Conference 111-110 in the NBA All-Star Game at Washington's MCI Center on 11 February 2001. Philadelphia guard Allen Iverson scored 25 points and received the Most Valuable Player award. Fifteen of his points came in the fourth quarter, making the final period decisive rather than simply narrowing the score after a settled result.

Details

The West had established a 95-74 advantage with roughly nine minutes remaining. Iverson and New Jersey guard Stephon Marbury then supplied the scoring that reversed the game. Marbury made two three-pointers inside the final minute: one tied the teams at 108, and the next gave the East the final 111-110 lead after Kobe Bryant had answered with a jumper. The comeback therefore survived another change of lead, rather than ending when the East first caught up.

Context

Larry Brown coached the winning East team, while Rick Adelman led the West. David Robinson's final All-Star appearance produced eight points and four rebounds in ten minutes. His Western Conference side therefore finished just short despite controlling most of the evening. This was a conference exhibition victory for the East, separate from the league's regular-season standings and championship playoffs.
