Confirmed development
The AFC defeated the NFC 38–17 in the Pro Bowl at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu on 4 February 2001. Oakland quarterback Rich Gannon completed 12 of 14 passes for 160 yards and earned player-of-the-game honours. His two opening possessions produced touchdown drives of 87 and 90 yards, establishing a 14–0 advantage before Peyton Manning took over at quarterback.
Details
Manning then led a possession ending with a Matt Stover field goal, extending the difference to 17–0 early in the second quarter. Jimmy Smith's two-yard touchdown reception shortly before half-time helped the AFC reach the interval ahead 24–3. Tony Gonzalez caught six passes for 108 yards, with all of that production coming before the break.
Context
The NFC reduced the deficit through third-quarter touchdown passes by Donovan McNabb and Daunte Culpepper, reaching 31–17. Jason Taylor subsequently knocked down a fourth-down pass, stopping another NFC possession. Edgerrin James followed with a 20-yard touchdown run that completed the scoring. The game was the league's conference all-star exhibition, not a playoff contest or a championship decision.
