Confirmed development
Romania defeated Spain 27–12 at Estadio de La Cartuja in Seville on 18 February 2001 in the second round of the European Nations Cup. The visitors led 10–9 at half-time, but Spain moved ahead after the restart. Three Romanian scoring entries between the 66th and 71st minutes then changed a two-point deficit into a decisive advantage.
Details
Spain's entire total came from four Andrei Kovalenco penalties. His first two kicks put the home side 6–3 ahead before Petru Balan's try, converted by Petre Mitu, gave Romania a 10–6 lead. Kovalenco reduced the gap before half-time and added his fourth penalty in the 46th minute to put Spain 12–10 in front.
Context
A converted Romanian try in the 66th minute restored the visitors' lead at 17–12. Mitu added a penalty four minutes later, followed by a Vasile Ghioc try and another Mitu conversion in the 71st minute. Those 17 unanswered points settled the match. Spain and Romania were the two teams in this European competition that had appeared at the 1999 Rugby World Cup; Romania had finished the preceding European campaign unbeaten.
