Confirmed development
Scotland and Wales drew 28–28 at Murrayfield in Edinburgh on 17 February in the second round of the 2001 Six Nations. Wales led 18–6 at half-time, but Scotland scored 22 points to its opponent’s ten after the interval. The twelve-point difference in the second-half totals exactly erased the home team’s deficit at the break.
Details
Neil Jenkins scored 23 of Wales’s 28 points, with three drop goals in the first half forming a substantial part of his contribution. The Welsh federation’s account identifies that three-drop-goal return as a Welsh match record. His scoring supplied more than four-fifths of the visiting team’s points, but it was insufficient to secure an away victory.
Context
The draw gave each national team its first championship point of the year after an opening defeat. Scotland had lost 16–6 to France at the Stade de France on 4 February, while Wales had been beaten 44–15 by England in Cardiff the previous day. Steve Lander refereed the Murrayfield meeting, which completed both teams’ February championship programmes.
