Life and work
The story behind the role.
Aaron Coutts is Distinguished Professor and Head of the School of Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation at the University of Technology Sydney, where he also directs the Human Performance Research Centre.
His doctoral work developed athlete- and training-monitoring methods intended to mitigate overtraining risk. UTS says his subsequent research has built an evidence base for optimising athlete training, health and performance, much of it in partnership with sport organisations so that findings can be applied in practice.
UTS records a Bachelor of Applied Science in Human Movement Studies from the University of Queensland, followed by a Master of Human Movement Science and PhD at Central Queensland University. His documented applied roles include sport-science consulting for Carlton Football Club from 2010 to 2020, advisory work for Nike's sport-research and performance councils and service on the Exercise and Sports Science Australia board from 2014 to 2024.
