Bertan Ünal
Türkiye defender and head coach named in the 2023 European Sixes bronze-medal squad.
Life and work
The story behind the role.
Bertan Ünal played collegiate lacrosse as a defender at Providence College. His senior roster biography records 16 appearances and 14 starts in 2009, when he collected 28 ground balls and caused 17 turnovers. In 2010 he played in 12 games, starting six.
Before Providence, he earned four varsity lacrosse letters at Winston Churchill High School, captained the team as a junior and senior, and received All-America recognition in 2007. Providence credits him with a school-record 403 career ground balls.
World Lacrosse named him, as Bertan Hamdi Unal, in Türkiye’s inaugural World Championship squad in 2014. The national association subsequently listed him in the 2018 world roster and as an assistant coach and defender in 2022. Its 2023 European Sixes roster identifies him as head coach as well as a player; that team won bronze.
Bertan Ünal appears in the Turkey Lacrosse Association’s archived Türkiye national-team roster for the 2022 European Championships, with the role listed as assistant coach and defence.
