The story behind the role.
King began playing on public courts in California and became world number one in the 1960s. Her fast, attacking style brought success in singles, doubles and mixed doubles across all four majors.
Her influence extends far beyond results. She helped establish the Women’s Tennis Association, campaigned for equal prize money and co-founded organisations that used sport to advance equality.
