Life and work

The story behind the role.

Cal Dietz joined the University of Minnesota athletic-performance staff in 2000 and is listed by Minnesota Athletics as Associate Director of Athletic Performance for the men's and women's ice-hockey programmes. His earlier Gophers assignments included basketball, golf, swimming, track and field, baseball and wrestling.

Dietz earned a bachelor's degree in physical education from the University of Findlay in 1996. Minnesota records that he competed there in football and wrestling, belonged to three national-championship teams, earned two football All-America honours and was the NAIA National Duals most valuable wrestler; Findlay inducted him into its Hall of Fame in 2005.

After graduate-assistant strength-and-conditioning work at Minnesota and completion of a Master of Education in 2000, Dietz briefly returned to Findlay as strength coordinator for 26 men's and women's teams, offensive-line coach, fitness-centre coordinator and instructor. His Minnesota profile also documents CSCS certification and publications on collegiate ice-hockey workload, performance and body composition.
