Life and work

The story behind the role.

Cengiz Öncül, remembered as Tatava Cengiz, was a prominent Beşiktaş supporter leader in the 1970s. The Beşiktaş Local History Project credits him with adapting the club’s celebrated üçlü chant after watching supporters at the 1970 World Cup.

He led support in the stadium and at indoor sporting events, later passing the terrace-leading role to younger supporters. His wider connection to the club included Divan Council membership.

Away from the terraces, he operated Öncül Büfe in Etiler, a neighbourhood business opened in the early 1970s. He died in June 2017. The history project draws on a Beşiktaş magazine interview and contemporary reporting.
