Grant Wahl
Football journalist, author and broadcaster whose reporting connected the sport with politics, human rights and gender equality.

Life and work
The story behind the role.
Grant Wahl was an American football journalist, author and broadcaster. Princeton Alumni Weekly records that he grew up in Mission, Kansas, studied politics at Princeton University and served as co-editor of The Daily Princetonian's sports pages during his senior year.
His friendship with Princeton soccer coach Bob Bradley and research for his award-winning senior thesis, Playing the Political Game: Soccer Clubs in Argentine Civil Society, helped establish the football focus that shaped his career. After graduating in 1996, Wahl spent 24 years at Sports Illustrated before launching the independent newsletter Fútbol with Grant Wahl.
Wahl also worked on television for CBS Sports and Fox Sports and wrote The Beckham Experiment and Masters of Modern Soccer. Princeton's memorial describes how he brought politics, reporting and concern for justice together in journalism that advanced gender equality and human rights, while mentoring younger journalists.
He died on 9 December 2022 from an aortic aneurysm while covering the FIFA World Cup in Qatar. This profile separates that historical record from any suggestion of a current appointment.
