İlker Meral
Football referee and pharmacy graduate with earlier club and university playing experience.
Life and work
The story behind the role.
Born in Akhisar in 1971, he graduated from Ege University’s pharmacy faculty. His 2009 TFF interview describes entering refereeing during military service in Eskişehir.
As a player he represented amateur teams in Savaştepe and Balıkesir, spent time in Altay and Göztepe youth football, and played for Ege University, chiefly in midfield and on the left wing.
His father and uncle had refereed at third-tier level. He spent several years in amateur refereeing before reaching the professional leagues, and the interview discusses his approach to retaining control through communication rather than aggression.
