Nefise Bulgu completed a Hacettepe sociology doctorate in 1989–1995. Her published work includes a 1997 study of gender discrimination in sport news photographs and a 1999 study of gender in amateur football.
Later research addresses women’s everyday physical activity, football violence and masculinity, and sport socialisation. A 2013 paper examines masculinity in football through situated learning; a 2016 coauthored paper examines Turkish language used for women in sport. Her institutional record also lists projects, graduate supervision and conference research on coach–athlete power and abuse.
