What the publication reports
All evaluated resistance-training prescriptions improved strength and muscle size compared with no exercise. The strength analysis included 178 studies and 5,097 participants. The review compares combinations of training variables rather than a single exercise.
Limits and interpretation
Within-study risk of bias was moderate to high. Evidence from healthy adults does not automatically establish the best programme for elite athletes, rehabilitation or every individual.
