The story
Paul Azinger won the Sony Open in Hawaii on 16 January 2000 with a four-round total of 261, 19 under par. The American finished seven strokes ahead of Stuart Appleby at Waialae Country Club in Honolulu. His victory followed the PGA Tour’s opening event at Kapalua and delivered a decisive result at the second Hawaiian stop.
How it unfolded
Azinger opened with a 63 and added rounds of 65, 68 and 65. The sequence kept every round below the course’s par of 70 and produced a total that Appleby, who finished on 268, could not match. The official tournament history also records Azinger’s winner’s cheque of $522,000 from the $2.9 million prize fund.
The wider picture
The seven-shot separation was a significant part of the performance, rather than simply a narrow conversion of a final-round lead. PGA Tour reporting later identified it as the Sony Open’s previous margin-of-victory record when Jimmy Walker won by nine in 2015. That subsequent comparison preserves the scale of Azinger’s January 2000 achievement within the event’s historical record.
