The story
Tiger Woods won the 2000 Mercedes Championships at Kapalua after a playoff against Ernie Els on 9 January. Both players completed the four regulation rounds in 276 strokes, 16 under par, before Woods settled the title on the second extra hole. The result gave the American the first PGA Tour championship of the new year.
How it unfolded
Woods recorded rounds of 71, 66, 71 and 68 on the Plantation Course. Els returned 71, 70, 67 and 68, making a different route to the same aggregate. Their identical closing rounds left the championship unresolved after 72 holes. David Duval finished third on 280, four strokes behind the two players who advanced to the playoff.
The wider picture
The tournament was the winners-only season opener, bringing together the previous season’s PGA Tour champions. Its Hawaiian setting and par-73 course produced a direct early-season contest between Woods and Els. The official historical result identifies Woods as champion while retaining the tied regulation totals, an important distinction when interpreting the leaderboard.
