The story
Galatasaray won the UEFA Super Cup on 25 August 2000, defeating Real Madrid 2–1 after extra time at Stade Louis II. Mário Jardel scored both goals for the Turkish club.
How it unfolded
Jardel’s first-half penalty gave Galatasaray the lead, before Raúl equalised from the spot in the second half. The contest was decided by Jardel’s extra-time golden goal, adding another European trophy after the UEFA Cup victory in May.
The wider picture
Mircea Lucescu was now coaching Galatasaray, following Fatih Terim’s departure. The match also reflected a change in the Super Cup pairing: the UEFA Cup winners faced the Champions League winners after the Cup Winners’ Cup had ended.
