The story

How it unfolded

Fernando Morientes opened the scoring in the 39th minute. Steve McManaman added the second in the 67th and Raúl González completed the result in the 75th. Vicente del Bosque led Madrid, while Héctor Cúper coached Valencia.

The wider picture

Madrid had eliminated Manchester United in the quarter-finals and Bayern München in the semi-finals. Valencia reached Paris after beating Lazio and Barcelona. The final therefore completed two distinct routes through a season with a second group phase before the knockout rounds.
