The result

Anikó Kapros won the girls’ singles title at the 2000 Australian Open, defeating María José Martínez Sánchez 6–2, 3–6, 6–2 in Melbourne. The Hungarian recovered the advantage after the Spanish finalist levelled the match and won the deciding set by the same four-game margin as the opener.

The competition

The completed result is recorded independently in the Australian Open’s official girls’ singles honour roll and the ITF’s historical junior championship guide. Kapros followed 1999 champion Virginie Razzano of France in the tournament’s record. The three-set final established the winner of the junior singles draw, a championship separate from the senior women’s event.

The wider context

Kapros’s success formed part of a broader winning junior campaign at the same edition: she also took the girls’ doubles title with Australia’s Christina Wheeler, as confirmed by the tournament’s doubles honour roll. The two championships involved different draws and opponents. Her singles victory therefore stands as an individual result, while the partnership title provides additional context for her week in Melbourne.
