Paton takes the sprint title

Siobhan Paton won the women's 50m freestyle S14 title at the Sydney 2000 Paralympics in 29.13 seconds. Australia's swimmer finished 0.24 seconds ahead of Great Britain's Emma Mounkley, who took silver in 29.37, while Tracy Wiscombe won bronze in 29.55.

The qualifying order changes

Paton's route to the title began with a second-place swim in the first heat. Mounkley led that heat in 29.67, with Paton recording 29.76. In the final, Paton improved her own qualifying time by 0.63 seconds and reversed the order at the front of the race.

Wiscombe had won the second heat in 30.57 before improving to 29.55 in the final. Her bronze medal gave Great Britain two places on the podium. Spain's Yolanda Jurado finished fourth in 29.99, 0.44 seconds behind Wiscombe, and Australia's Alicia Aberley was fifth in 30.43.

The full final

Ivana Kumpostova and Vera Stillnerova represented the Czech delegation in the final, finishing sixth in 30.46 and seventh in 31.00 respectively. Estonia's Janne Mugame completed the eight-swimmer final in 31.25. The result sheet provides a direct comparison between the two qualifying heats and the championship race.

A six-title championship

The sprint was one of six individual gold medals that Paton won in Sydney. Paralympics Australia's retrospective identifies her as 17 years old at the Games and records that her victories came across a range of strokes. The 50m freestyle result therefore belongs to a wider, multi-event championship campaign, while remaining a distinct race with its own finalists and podium.
