The result
Lisa Raymond and Rennae Stubbs won the women’s doubles championship at the 2000 Australian Open in Melbourne. The American-Australian pair defeated Martina Hingis and Mary Pierce 6–4, 5–7, 6–4 in the final, taking the deciding set after their opponents had levelled the match.
The competition
Raymond and Stubbs secured the opening set by a two-game margin. Hingis and Pierce extended the contest by winning the second 7–5, but the eventual champions repeated the first set’s 6–4 scoreline to settle the title. The completed result is recorded in the tournament’s official honour roll for the January 2000 edition.
The wider context
Hingis had won the previous three Melbourne doubles titles with different partners: Natasha Zvereva in 1997, Mirjana Lučić in 1998 and Anna Kournikova in 1999. Raymond and Stubbs ended that sequence by winning their own partnership’s championship. Their success also gave Stubbs a senior doubles title at her home Grand Slam, separately from the mixed event in which she partnered Jared Palmer.
