The result

Rennae Stubbs and Jared Palmer won the 2000 Australian Open mixed doubles title in Melbourne on 30 January. The Australian-American pair defeated Todd Woodbridge and Arantxa Sánchez Vicario 7–5, 7–6(3), completing the championship in straight sets after a closely contested final.

The competition

The champions needed a late separation to take the first set 7–5. The second went to a tiebreak, where Stubbs and Palmer prevailed by seven points to three. The result gave them the two sets required for the title without a deciding set and confirmed their place in the tournament’s official mixed doubles record.

The wider context

Woodbridge and Sánchez Vicario had won this championship together in 1993, making the runners-up an established title-winning combination in Melbourne. Stubbs also won the women’s doubles trophy at the 2000 edition alongside Lisa Raymond. Her mixed victory was a separate draw and partnership achievement, adding a second senior doubles championship to her Australian Open campaign.
