Heike Drechsler wins Sydney long jump gold with 6.99m

The winning jump

Germany’s Heike Drechsler won the women’s long jump final at the Sydney Olympics on 29 September 2000 with 6.99m. Italy’s Fiona May finished second with 6.92m, leaving a seven-centimetre difference between the two best valid marks.

Drechsler’s winning distance came on her third attempt, with a recorded following wind of +1.9 metres per second. Her series was 6.48m, a foul, 6.99m, 6.79m and two further fouls. May’s best mark came on her third jump too.

The corrected medal allocation

Tatyana Kotova of Russia is the bronze medallist with 6.83m in the current official classification. The 2000 results book originally placed Marion Jones third, but that allocation is no longer the Olympic result.

The IOC disqualified Jones from her Sydney events on 12 December 2007 following her admission of prohibited-substance use. Its subsequent reallocation awarded the long jump bronze to Kotova. Jones appears as disqualified in the World Athletics final record.

The rest of the final

Olga Rublyova finished fourth with 6.79m and Susen Tiedtke fifth with 6.74m in the corrected standings. Jackie Edwards and Tünde Vaszi both recorded 6.59m; Lyudmila Galkina recorded 6.56m, followed by Elva Goulbourne, Dawn Burrell-Campbell and Olena Shekhovtsova.

The event photograph shows the women’s long jump final itself. It does not identify the athlete in flight as Drechsler or claim to capture the winning attempt.
