Drechsler and Burrell reach the Olympic long jump final from Group B
Heike Drechsler qualified with 6.84m and Dawn Burrell-Campbell with 6.77m in Sydney’s long jump preliminary round.
Event date:
Automatic qualification
Heike Drechsler led Group B of the Olympic women’s long jump qualification on 27 September 2000 with 6.84m. Dawn Burrell-Campbell followed with 6.77m, and Tünde Vaszi reached the automatic qualifying distance with 6.70m.
The qualification standard was 6.70m, with at least twelve athletes progressing by performance if fewer cleared that distance. A qualifying mark secured a place in the final; it did not carry forward as a medal-winning result.
Burrell’s three attempts
Burrell opened with a foul, jumped 6.68m on her second attempt and reached 6.77m on her third. The recorded wind for her best attempt was +0.2 metres per second. Drechsler cleared the standard on her first jump.
Tatyana Kotova recorded 6.66m and Olga Rublyova 6.65m in Group B. In Group A, Fiona May recorded 6.81m. The medal final followed on 29 September.
