The story

Venus Williams defeated Lindsay Davenport 6–4, 7–5 in the 2000 US Open women’s singles final. The victory on 9 September added the New York hard-court title to her Wimbledon championship earlier that summer.

How it unfolded

Williams had reached her first US Open final in 1997, when she lost to Martina Hingis. Three years later, she completed the championship match against Davenport in straight sets, taking the decisive break at the end of a closely contested second set.

The wider picture

The tournament’s retrospective follows the development of Williams’s campaign and the final exchanges: Davenport’s errors while serving to stay in the match allowed Williams to close out the title. This was the US Open result, separate from Williams’s later Olympic singles and doubles victories in Sydney.
