Confirmed development
Switzerland defeated the United States 3–2 in the Davis Cup World Group first round in Basel from 9 to 11 February 2001. Roger Federer delivered all three Swiss points, clinching the tie by beating Jan-Michael Gambill 7–5, 6–2, 4–6, 6–2 on the final day. That victory made the running score 3–1 before the last singles match was played.
Details
Federer had opened with a four-set win over Todd Martin, while Gambill beat Michel Kratochvil to leave the teams level after Friday's singles. Federer then partnered Lorenzo Manta in a 6–4, 6–2, 7–5 doubles victory over Gambill and Justin Gimelstob. The doubles point therefore gave the hosts the lead entering Sunday's reverse singles at St. Jakobs Hall.
Context
Andy Roddick defeated George Bastl 6–3, 6–4 in the final rubber, which the captains agreed to contest over the shorter best-of-three format. That result narrowed the final margin without changing qualification. The USTA record identifies indoor hard Greenset as the surface and Jakob Hlasek and Patrick McEnroe as the captains. Switzerland advanced to face France; this was a first-round success, not the Davis Cup title.
