Bayern finds its decisive scoring stretch

Bayern Munich defeated ALBA Berlin 99–84 at the Uber Arena on 24 January for its thirteenth EuroLeague victory of the season. Carsen Edwards finished with a personal best of 34 points, six rebounds and six assists, while Andreas Obst contributed 21 points and made six of his seven three-point attempts. The visitors led only 52–50 at halftime. Their advantage became much more secure in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter, when Edwards helped make it 81–70 and further baskets from Obst and Niels Giffey stretched the lead to 88–72.

Berlin keeps answering until the final quarter

ALBA’s account records an early 15–6 deficit before Yanni Wetzell, Gabriele Procida and Will McDowell-White supplied energy from the bench and restored a 27–27 tie. Wetzell’s three successful three-pointers helped keep Berlin within two points, 70–68, entering the last period. The hosts therefore had a realistic opportunity to win well beyond the opening exchanges. Edwards then scored ten fourth-quarter points while playing the entire second half. McDowell-White hit two more three-pointers, but Obst answered with three difficult long-range baskets. McDowell-White led Berlin with 18 points; Wetzell added 14, Procida 11, and David McCormack, Matteo Spagnolo and Matt Thomas each scored ten. Coach Israel González’s explanation focused on late mistakes and Bayern’s 18 successful three-pointers from 36 attempts. The match was watched by 12,112 spectators. Berlin had forced Bayern into eighteen turnovers. Captain Martin Hermannsson was unavailable, while Spagnolo returned to the roster after his own absence.

The rematch arrives in a different setting

The January 21 preview had placed the derby in the context of ALBA’s 88–81 Bundesliga victory over Bayern earlier in the month. That domestic comeback made the next meeting especially prominent, but the clubs were approaching a separate competition with different preparation. Bayern had six days to prepare after its EuroLeague defeat by Virtus Bologna and had not played a league game over the preceding weekend. ALBA had meanwhile taken rhythm from a meeting with Heidelberg. The preview also identified Bayern as the EuroLeague team making the most three-pointers per game at that point, with Edwards and Obst central to that threat. Their scoring in Berlin gave the result a direct connection to the strengths already described before tipoff. There were familiar faces in the visiting team as well: Giffey and Oscar da Silva had both played for ALBA, adding another connection between the squads.

A captain returns to the rotation

Vladimir Lučić returned for Bayern after 102 days away and scored four points. Shabazz Napier was absent with a flu-like infection. Bayern next had a domestic game against Bamberg before its EuroLeague visit to Kaunas, so the Berlin result supplied a successful start to another sequence of commitments.
