Event date:
Providence breaks a scoreless game
Providence College retained the Mayor’s Cup by beating Brown 2–0 at Meehan Auditorium on 7 January. The No.5/4 Friars scored both goals on third-period power plays, with Logan Will opening the scoring after 24 seconds and Hudson Malinoski adding the second at 13:13. Zachary Borgiel stopped 29 shots for his second shutout of the season and fourth of his career. Andrew Centrella and Will Elger assisted Will’s seventh goal of the season. Guillaume Richard and Logan Sawyer supplied the assists for Malinoski’s fourth. Providence’s eighth consecutive win improved its record to 15–3–2, while Brown fell to 4–7–2.
The Bears’ best opening cannot supply a goal
Brown’s account records 40 saves by Tyler Shea in front of nearly 1,800 spectators. The Bears led the first-period shot count 17–11, their highest recorded total in a single period that season. Brett Bliss had a late opening-period chance from Tyler Kopff’s pass, but Borgiel kept it out. Providence then outshot Brown 15–5 in the second period without either side scoring. Brown’s coach Brendan Whittet assessed his team as fast and physical, while acknowledging the quality of the visiting opponent. He also identified the two power-play goals as the difference after a scoreless first forty minutes. Brown finished 0-for-2 with the extra skater, compared with Providence’s 2-for-4, and blocked 17 shots to the Friars’ 12. The final overall shot count was 42–29 in Providence’s favour.
An established rivalry meets a winning run
The January 6 preview set the game against Providence’s seven-game winning streak and its recent Ledyard Classic title. The Friars had beaten Dartmouth 5–3 on December 29, recovering from a first-period deficit to win that holiday tournament. They entered the Brown fixture with a 9–1–0 non-conference record and an 8–1–1 record away from Schneider Arena. The rivalry supplied a separate incentive: Providence was defending the Mayor’s Cup after a 3–0 victory the previous season. Its four preceding victories at Meehan Auditorium had produced an 18–1 combined score. Brown arrived after consecutive home defeats by Union and RPI, following a 3–0 win over LIU. Brian Nicholas led the Bears’ scoring before the fixture with 13 points in twelve games, while the overall series record in Providence’s preview stood at 55 wins, 47 defeats and three ties.
The result carries into the next commitments
Providence held Brown scoreless through three minutes of six-on-five play after the Bears removed their goaltender. Will extended his personal point streak to eight games, and the Friars made it five consecutive wins at Meehan Auditorium.
Conference games await Brown
Brown’s next scheduled games were conference road visits to Harvard on January 10 and Dartmouth on January 11, bringing the Bears back into ECAC play after the local rivalry.
