FIDE’s Global Conference on Chess in Society and Education opened at KIIT in Bhubaneswar. The three-day gathering brought together chess officials, researchers and practitioners working on the game’s educational and social applications, and launched the Year of Chess in Education 2026.

The opening included FIDE representatives Dana Reizniece and Viswanathan Anand, alongside KIIT founder Achyuta Samanta and other organisers. Sessions were designed to connect research with practical programmes rather than limiting discussion to chess competition alone.

The host institution presented its established chess activities as part of the conference context. KIIT has staged chess festivals for eighteen years and organised thirty international events, including the World Junior Championship, while forty-six international players have emerged through its programme.
