Funchal welcomes Europe's women's water polo championship

The Women's European Water Polo Championship opened in Funchal on 26 January, bringing sixteen national teams to Madeira. It was the first edition hosted by Portugal, with the competition scheduled through 5 February.

The field included defending champion Netherlands, Hungary, Spain, Greece, Italy, France, Great Britain, Croatia and Türkiye. Group-stage matches were followed by the knockout and classification rounds.

Update, 5 February: the Netherlands retained the title after a 10-10 draw with Hungary and a 5-3 penalty shootout victory. Greece took bronze with a 15-8 win over Italy. The Dutch success was their seventh European championship title.
