Washington defeated Montreal 5-4 at Capital One Arena on 14 October 2026. Alex Tuch scored twice and added an assist, while Justin Holl broke a 3-3 tie in the third period to help the Capitals end a two-game losing sequence.

The teams traded leads before the decisive period. Josh Anderson scored twice for Montreal, while Jordan Kyrou and Ivan Miroshnichenko supplied Washington goals. Tuch also scored short-handed in the second period, but Anderson's second brought the Canadiens level again.

Holl put Washington ahead at 12:29 of the third. Tuch extended the lead to 5-3 at 17:05 before Nick Suzuki pulled Montreal within one at 18:21 during a six-on-four advantage. The Canadiens could not find another equaliser, leaving Washington with the regulation win.

Kyrou finished with a goal and an assist, while Lane Hutson had the same return for Montreal. The Capitals moved to 4-3-0 and the Canadiens to 3-3-1. The final result is confirmed by both the official NHL report and AP; early conflicting save totals are excluded from this account.
