FIDE approves Chess960 ratings and sets conditional 2030 host process
The General Assembly’s published decisions establish a ratings deadline while leaving the Olympiad host contract conditional.

FIDE has published the principal decisions of its General Assembly, held in Samarkand on 26–27 September. Delegates approved an official rating system for Fischer Random Chess, also known as Chess960, with implementation required no later than 1 June 2027. The decision authorises a framework; it does not mean a rating list is already operating.
For the 2030 Chess Olympiad, disability Olympiad and Congress, the Assembly instructed the Management Board to negotiate with Qatar. A contract remains dependent on organisational and financial guarantees and formal approval. Georgia would receive the right to sign if those requirements are not met within a reasonable timeframe.
The Assembly elected Timur Turlov president and Viswanathan Anand deputy president. It also approved joint English and French institutional naming while retaining English as the working language. An extraordinary online Assembly later in 2026 will consider budgets for 2027 and 2028.
