Şenol Güneş coached Türkiye to third place at the 2002 World Cup and Trabzonspor to the Turkish Cup preceding his February 2011 TFF interview. His career also included work in South Korea. The federation’s national-team match publication documents his earlier career as a Trabzonspor goalkeeper, including six league championships and a 1,112-minute league run without conceding in 1978–79. TFF’s coaching register records later appointments with Bursaspor, Beşiktaş and Trabzonspor.
