Event date:
Holse restores the advantage
Samsunspor defeated Trabzonspor 2–1 at the Samsun Yeni 19 Mayıs Stadium on 4 January in the eighteenth round of the Süper Lig. The federation records an 8 p.m. kickoff, with Mehmet Türkmen as referee. Carlo Holse scored in the thirtieth minute and again in the seventy-fifth, with Simon Banza heading Trabzonspor level early in the second half. The broadcaster’s highlights describe Youssef Aït Bennasser releasing Holse for the opener, which the Dane finished through goalkeeper Uğurcan Çakır’s legs. The winner followed Zeki Yavru’s corner and Marius Mouandilmadji’s header across goal. Holse converted at the far post. Okan Kocuk had earlier saved from Banza and later denied Serdar Saatçi, keeping the hosts in the contest before the deciding goal.
A changed Samsunspor team
Thomas Reis made four changes from the side that had drawn 0–0 at Sivasspor. Rick van Drongelen was suspended, while Marc Bola and Arbnor Muja began on the bench. Soner Gönül, Yunus Emre Çift, Celil Yüksel and Kingsley Schindler came into the starting team. The broadcaster’s team report also records that Olivier Ntcham, Gaëtan Laura, Landry Dimata and Flavien Tait were omitted after returning late from the Christmas break. Trabzonspor coach Şenol Güneş made two changes from his previous lineup against Bodrum, bringing in Saatçi and Arseniy Batagov in place of Ali Şahin Yılmaz and Batista Mendy. The two managers therefore approached the derby with revised starting elevens.
Reis praises the response
In his original postmatch interview with beIN SPORTS, Reis said he was proud of the team’s response to its problems before the game. He described a difficult derby and credited the players with an exceptional performance and commitment. Asked about his decisions, the coach explained that the team had rules and that collective responsibility mattered. He said he would have accepted responsibility had Samsunspor dropped points and would still have made the same decisions. Before the match, Reis had called this his first Turkish derby and said its importance to the supporters and city required a better performance than the one at Sivasspor.
Third place and a home derby sequence
The win took Samsunspor to 33 points and reinforced third place, according to the contemporaneous broadcaster’s recap. Trabzonspor remained on 19 points in fourteenth. The visiting club’s match centre provides the recent rivalry context: Samsunspor had also won the previous meeting in Samsun, 3–1 on 4 May 2024, while Trabzonspor had won the January 2024 fixture at home, 2–1. This result continued that sequence of home victories in their league meetings. The derby was also a major occasion in the stands. The broadcaster reported a full home stadium and said Trabzonspor supporters had taken all 1,608 tickets allocated to them.
