Russia secured a place in the 2000 European men’s handball final with a 30–23 victory over France in Zagreb on 29 January. The seven-goal semi-final win guaranteed Russia at least a silver medal. France moved into the third-place match against Spain.
The competition
Russia took a 16–10 lead into half-time and scored another 14 goals after the interval. Eduard Koksharov led the Russian scoring with nine goals, followed by seven from Oleg Khodkov. Patrick Cazal scored six for France and Grégory Anquetil contributed five.
The wider context
The official match record lists 3,000 spectators in Zagreb. Russia had entered the semi-final after winning four of their five group matches, with Sweden inflicting their only defeat. The semi-final therefore set up another meeting with Sweden, this time to decide the European championship, while France’s medal hopes depended on the bronze match.
