Sweden defeated Russia 32–31 in Zagreb on 30 January 2000 to retain the men’s European handball title. The final required two periods of extra time after the teams finished regulation at 24–24. It gave Sweden a third European championship in the first four editions, following their victories in 1994 and 1998.

The competition

Russia led 15–9 at half-time, but Sweden erased that six-goal deficit before the end of regulation. The score was still level at 27–27 after the first extra-time period. Magnus Wislander finished with ten goals for Sweden, while Pierre Thorsson added six. Dmitri Filippov scored six for Russia.

The EHF match record lists 7,500 spectators at the final. Sweden completed the championship with seven wins from seven matches, including a 28–25 group-stage victory over Russia. The Swedish federation’s historical record also confirms the 32–31 final and the two extra-time periods. Russia took silver, with Spain completing the podium.
