Spain won the bronze medal at the 2000 men’s European handball championship by beating France 24–23 in Zagreb on 30 January. The result settled the last podium place after both teams had lost their semi-finals the previous day. France finished fourth, one goal away from a medal.
The competition
Spain held a 13–12 lead at half-time and finished with the same one-goal advantage. Talant Dujshebaev contributed ten of Spain’s 24 goals. Bertrand Gille scored six for France and Jackson Richardson added five. The official EHF record lists 4,000 spectators for the third-place match.
The wider context
The two teams had already met in the preliminary round, when France won 28–22 on 25 January. Spain reversed that result in the medal match to join champions Sweden and runners-up Russia on the podium. EHF’s tournament history independently identifies the 24–23 result as the bronze-medal decider.
