Erik Schlopy won the men's European Cup giant slalom in Pozza di Fassa on 17 January 2000. The American finished with a final total of 1:44.96, 0.69 seconds ahead of France's Raphaël Burtin. Italy's Ivan Bormolini was third, 1.03 seconds from the winning time.
Rainer Schönfelder took fourth at 1.13 seconds, only one tenth behind Bormolini. Fellow Austrian Christoph Gruber followed in fifth at 1.30, with Finland's Sami Uotila sixth at 1.44. Schlopy and Burtin were the only classified racers within one second of the winner, while four national teams were represented in the first five positions.
The giant slalom was the first of two separate men's European Cup technical races on the official Pozza programme; a slalom followed on 18 January. Schlopy's victory belongs to the completed giant-slalom classification. Burtin had won the Kranjska Gora giant slalom earlier in January, but finished second in this encounter. The result supplied a United States victory ahead of French and Italian podium finishers at the Italian venue.
