Confirmed development
France reached the men's Handball World Championship final by defeating Egypt 24–21 at Bercy in Paris on 3 February 2001. The hosts had trailed 10–8 at half-time, so qualification required a reversal rather than the defence of an early advantage. France's second-half return was 16 goals to Egypt's 11, calculated from the official interval and final scores.
Details
Egypt had reached the semi-final by defeating Russia 21–19 in the previous knockout round. France arrived after a 26–23 extra-time victory against Germany, with a late Jackson Richardson equaliser having kept that quarter-final alive. Both sides therefore entered this meeting after tight qualifying matches, but only France converted its opportunity into a place in the final.
Context
This was France's third appearance in a world final, following Stockholm in 1993 and Reykjavik in 1995. Its next opponent was defending champion Sweden, while Egypt moved into the bronze-medal match against Yugoslavia. Both medal fixtures were scheduled for 4 February in Paris; the semi-final alone decided neither title nor bronze.
