Confirmed development

Sweden advanced to the men's Handball World Championship final with a 25–24 victory over Yugoslavia at Bercy in Paris on 3 February 2001. Stefan Lövgren scored the decisive goal in the closing seconds after Nedeljko Jovanović had brought Yugoslavia level at 24–24 from a penalty. The narrow finish followed a much larger Swedish advantage earlier in the match.

Details

Sweden led 14–9 at the interval, but Branislav Pokrajac's team recovered to make the closing phase competitive. Lövgren finished with 11 goals, Johan Ernelind supplied eight, Magnus Wislander four and Ljubomir Vranjes two. Those four players accounted for Sweden's entire 25-goal total in the contemporary official sports archive.

Context

Yugoslavia's comeback was insufficient to secure a place in the title match, but the defeated semi-finalists remained in contention for bronze against Egypt. Sweden instead advanced to face host France on 4 February. The semi-final established those next assignments without determining either team's final medal position.
