Confirmed development

France defeated Germany 26–23 after extra time in Albertville on 1 February 2001 to reach the men's Handball World Championship semi-finals. The hosts had been close to elimination before Jackson Richardson equalised with five seconds remaining in normal time. His intervention made the score 22–22 and gave France another opportunity to settle the quarter-final.

Details

Germany had overturned an 11–8 half-time deficit. Goalkeeper Henning Fritz made 18 stops and Thomas Knorr scored six goals, according to the European federation's account. Germany recovered from 19–17 down to lead 21–19, turning a contest France had initially controlled into a late test of the home side's response under pressure.

Context

France outscored Germany 4–1 in the additional period, the difference between the official regulation and final scores. Daniel Costantini's team advanced to meet Egypt, which had beaten Russia 21–19 in its quarter-final. The result therefore established a specific semi-final pairing; it did not yet secure the hosts a medal or a championship.
