Event date:
A fast start becomes a difficult night
Carlos Alcaraz reached the Roland-Garros fourth round on 30 May 2025 by defeating Damir Dzumhur 6-1, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 on Court Philippe-Chatrier. The defending champion needed three hours and 15 minutes to complete a match that had initially appeared much simpler. He won the opening two sets and led 3-2 in the third before Dzumhur changed the contest's direction.
The match was played in the Friday night session. Roland-Garros's principal post-match analysis was published on Saturday, 31 May, so the result belongs to 30 May even though that report carries the following day's date. Alcaraz's reward was a last-16 meeting with Ben Shelton, while Dzumhur's run ended after pushing the No.2 seed well beyond the uncomplicated opening exchanges.
Dzumhur changes the terms
Dzumhur had been managing a knee problem from his previous match against Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard. A medical timeout during the third set interrupted the flow, and Alcaraz was broken immediately after play resumed. The Bosnian then saved six break chances across the rest of the set and won it 6-4.
ATP reporting described Dzumhur taking a more aggressive position near the baseline, using his backhand down the line and moving forward to pressure Alcaraz. Those choices helped him turn defense into an opportunity to dictate points. His confidence carried into the fourth set, where he broke early and escaped a 0-40 service game to consolidate a 2-0 lead. That advantage soon became 3-1, putting the defending champion in danger of a deciding set.
The closing break finally holds
Alcaraz responded by winning four games in succession, changing a 1-3 deficit into a 5-3 lead. Yet the fourth set still did not close cleanly. When the Spaniard served for the match at 5-3, Dzumhur broke again, renewing the pressure at the point where the favorite had hoped to finish.
The champion answered with a break of his own in the next game. That final return game mattered more than the speed of his earlier lead: Alcaraz had to regain control after both a lost set and a failed attempt to serve out the match. Across the contest, he converted seven of 21 break opportunities. The substantial number of chances and the missed openings in the third set explain why the score's early imbalance gave way to a long struggle.
Progress in a title defense
Alcaraz had also dropped a set against Fabian Marozsan in the second round. The Dzumhur match therefore added another demand for sustained concentration to his title defense. In the tournament's account of his reaction, the Spaniard acknowledged a fall in energy as Dzumhur began playing deeper and with greater aggression.
Dzumhur's place in the third round had its own context. The tournament's preview recounted his return to elite competition after serious illness in 2022 and the renewed appreciation he brought to playing. On this night, that return had a tangible expression in the way he extended a match against the reigning champion.
Alcaraz still advanced. The result secured another appearance in Roland-Garros's second week, while making clear that his path through the draw required recovery and problem-solving as well as the attacking tennis with which he had started the evening.
