Andrea Abbiati set an Italian over-ninety record of 26:04.17 in the three-thousand-metre indoor race walk at Ancona. His performance cut almost three minutes from Ubaldo Dal Canto’s 2009 mark, with Olympic champion and longtime friend Abdon Pamich watching from the stands.

Abbiati began athletics only four years earlier, initially considering a marathon before taking up race walking. A documentary about his masters career was being filmed during the championship, which opened with seven Italian age-group bests.

Marco Mastrolorenzi scored 4,037 in the over-sixty-five pentathlon and cleared a national-record 1.66 metres in the high jump. Antonella Sant reached an over-sixty-five long-jump best of 4.19 metres, while Maria Grazia Rafti jumped 3.23 in the over-seventy-five category.
